The original plan was to watch The Darkest Hour 3D but when we sitting in Nandos before the start, Dave stated that he was keener to watch Underworld : Awakening. Bad things had been heard about the former so we decided to head to the pub for a couple of hours and then catch the 9:30 showing. I had never seen an Underworld film before, but figured I’d give it a go……
After amusing ourselves with a particular entertaining new way to open wine bottles (red, sir?) we headed to the cinema and the film kicked off.
The reason I had never seen an Underworld film before was because I thought they were child friendly CGI fests with plenty of action and no gore. How wrong I was. Whether it was men having their bones forced out through their joints, 12 year old girls having their throats chewn out by werewolves, or men having their throats ripped out and seeing their trachea contract as they took their dying breath, this film most certainly deserved it’s 18 certificate.
The plot was a little bit corny and a lot of the acting was quite poor (apart from Charles Dance who brought his usual class to proceedings) but I was actually really impressed with this. The sound was an absolute head fuck, the 3D was disappointing, but the action was pretty much relentless. Ok, it’s not high art but if you want to see an old fashioned, extremely brutal film about vampires fighting werewolves then, amazingly, this comes highly recommended.
I look forward to borrowing the Blu-ray box set off Dave and investigating the rest of the saga.
