A film I had been wanting to watch for some time, but due to Lovefilm not stocking it had not managed to do so. It turned up on Sky so I recorded it, and as Margaret enjoys ballet thought it might be a good film to watch together. Personally, I had middling hopes. I didn’t enjoy The Wrestler - finding it one of the most overrated films of the last decade. Indeed, I hadn’t particularly enjoyed any of Aronofsky’s movies. And I wasn’t a huge fan of Portman either.
And on watching the film, I wasn’t absolutely overwhelmed. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and found it an alluring mixture of beauty and brutality (and it IS shocking – possibly should have been given an 18 rating). Yet strangely as the week has gone on I found it in my head more and more. Most strange.
Anyway – one most definitely needs a strong stomach for this film. It is not gory as such but does feature brief, intense moments of body horror. There is perhaps less ballet than one expects too – but enough to keep females happy for sure.
Overall this is a superbly made, intelligent moving film and the only thing that lets it down is Natalie Portman – who is as poor as always. But other than this I cannot recommend this film highly enough.
