arie and I decided that we would go to the cinema on our last day together before we both headed back to normality and we narrowed it down to a choice between Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. As I was using my free passes, I didn’t want to waste them on a non IMAX film and I had also been told by a member of staff on our last visit that they were showing the nine minute opening of The Dark Knight Rises in front of Mission Impossible.
Surprise surprise the Odeon member of staff had been lying and The Dark Knight Rises wasn’t showing, but we still decided to see Mission Impossible - the first in the series that I had seen.
I must say that I was rather impressed. The story was quite convoluted and complicated, and was also extremely improbable but I guess this is usual for action films. The action scenes certainly kicked along impressively, and Tom Cruise is always likeable. But the film was sold on the IMAX shots done on the world’s tallest building – a hotel in Dubai and my God these were worth the entrance fee alone. Tom Cruise performed his own stunts for these scenes and they didn’t disappoint – and in IMAX they looked absolutely stunning.
So – if you have any desire to see this film at all, then do try and catch it in the cinema and do so in IMAX. It is truly worth the extra couple of quid. But if you are not particularly bothered then I would recommend it as a rental on Blu-ray when it lands. Sure – it wont have quite the same impact but it’s certainly an enjoyable few hours.
