ictoria and Keith had been raving about a feature length drama that had been showing on BBC 1 at Christmas – starring Eddie Izzard, it was called Lost Christmas. Even though I don’t particularly like Izzard, I had recorded it as it had received pretty good reviews. Finally, myself and Marie got round to watching it.
It is a difficult one to comment on, without giving too much away of the plot. What I will say is that it WAS extremely well put together – I truly didn’t guess the connections between the characters until right until the end. I will also say that it was EXTREMELY well acted – much better than the usual fare we are force fed in British drama. Izzard was absolutely superb in his role, wetting my appetite for Sky’s Treasure Island and Geoffrey Palmer was also very good in a cameo role. I was quite suprised that my sister hadn’t mentioned Jason Watkins (from Being Human) who was also superb in a disappointingly small role.
But there were some really laughable things about it too. Does it always have to snow at christmas? And if it does snow, does it have to be laughable CGI snow that doesn’t land on anyone’s clothes – even though they are black? And a key rescue scene was also incredibly disappointingly crap. No backup? No ambulance? Would a fireman, if he was rescuing a child on ice really walk out on two feet and heavy boots and clothes to increase his weight????
So – the usual British crapness did rear it’s ugly head in places, and both myself and Marie were noticing this. BUT – unlike most British TV this did, just, manage to raise itself above the stupid moments and become an extremely enjoyable 90 minutes of TV. Yeah, there were stupid moments, and yeah happy endings are just so passe! We’re bored with them. They don’t happen.
But simply for cleverness of plot, and some superb performances, as well as a twist that genuinely well keep you guessing right until the end – if you DO ever get a chance to watch this then I would, on balance, recommend it pretty highly!

I agree with you about happy endings, and with an ending like that, I would normally have been reaolly peeed off, but somehow the clever twists made it acceptible, which I think is just some very brave and clever script writing. It was billed as “a modern fairytale about a boy who gets to go back and right the wrongs to change the outcome” in my TV guide, which I suppose prepared you somewhat!!!!!
I also did notice the fireman scene was a bit off, but must admit it wasn’t enough to ruin things for me, as I was so caught up in the story I didn’t mind.
Personally I thought the snow was because it was a modern fairytale, and for that sort of magical effect rather than just Christmas, but then thats me!!!
Glad you enjoyed it tho, and that Eddie Izzards acting impressed.
