Alone

I wasn’t expecting much and I got exactly what I was expecting.  An interesting concept (Black Hawk Down meets Independence Day) ends up failing badly – the film clearly wants you to treat the emotions and dilemmas that the soldiers face as realistically as you would in, for example, Saving Private Ryan.  But the reality is that the film is merely trying to tell a pretty bog standard science fiction story.  The fact that the film deals in cliches, particularly with it’s characters just adds insult to injury.

Having said this, however, there were a couple of good points.  On the whole, the aliens are well visualised – only ever glimpsed in shakey-distance-cam and Eckhart puts in a good shift as heroic, flawed, leading cliche number 1.  And the sound is almost worth the watch alone.  If you’ve got a good sub this film will certainly give it a good workout.  I am struggling to remember a disc that goes this consistently low.

But the bottom line is that everything is just so…………unspectacular.  We’ve seen it all a million times before.  If you have a yearning desire to see things being blown up, and listen to some inspiring speeches about the value of being a marine then this film is for you.

It passes a couple of hours.  Barely.
