I had been hoping to put off the purchase of this, and wanted to force myself to read Stephen Fry’s autobiography which is sitting on my iPad – but I made the mistake of downloading the preview of Stephen King’s new novel 11.22.63. From the second I started reading, I was absolutely hooked! I had been given a preview earlier in the year – when I bought Mile 81 a chapter from the middle of 11.22.63 was included but I never really read it. I tried the first few paragraphs but it didn’t seem too gripping.
But then the comments started coming in from various people on the internet who had read the book. It was his best since IT quite a few were saying (and indeed, this book apparently intersects with that previous masterpiece on several levels), some were even going so far as to say it was better than even The Talisman.
But what sealed the deal was one reader saying – Thankyou Stephen King, I can finally forgive you for Under the Dome. Speaking as someone who hated that turgid overblown piece of crap as much as the reader obviously had – that sealed it for me and I purchased straight away.
I chose the enhanced edition as it was only a pound more – although I have to say that a trailer and a featurette written and directed by the author doesn’t exactly have me wetting myself. But if this is as even half as good as people are saying then I think I will thoroughly enjoy it. It has been a long time since a book has grabbed me and refused to let me go until it finished. Will this one do it?
I’ll let you know.
